In 1935, the Central Red Army reached what was then Wuqi town in Shaanxi province, bringing its Long March to a victorious end.
More than 60 years later, Nangou village in Wuqi county began returning farmland to forest. Villagers went from being reluctant and afraid to give up their farmland to planting trees, shovel by shovel, and tending them day after day.
Nowadays, the once-barren hills have turned green, and annual per capita income has risen from 660 yuan ($89.61) to more than 10,000 yuan. The village has opened a campsite and is generating income through ecotourism.
From barren hills to green landscapes, and from planting trees to improving livelihoods, Nangou village is creating a "green long march" in the new era.
